The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a new resolution on afforestation and reforestation, initiated by Uzbekistan, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During a session in New York, the UN General Assembly approved the resolution titled “Decade of Action on Sustainable Forestry for Afforestation and Reforestation.” The initiative gained co-sponsorship from over 80 countries, including Central Asian nations, Azerbaijan, Russia, Brazil, Austria, Germany, Finland, Portugal, India, Iran, Pakistan, UAE, Qatar, and Bahrain.
"The document aligns with Uzbekistan’s key environmental strategies, including: “Year of Environmental Protection and Green Economy” program, “Green Space” national project and “Central Asia Green Belt” tree-planting initiative," the report states.
The resolution designates 2027-2036 as the Decade of Action for Afforestation and Reforestation and aims to mobilize resources toward sustainable forest development. It also encourages governments and organizations to strengthen environmental measures.
In August 2024, the UN General Assembly unanimously passed the resolution “Establishing Sustainable Forests in Degraded and Arid Lands as an Effective Solution to Environmental Challenges, " following Uzbekistan's proposal. This resolution emphasized tree planting and forest conservation as a way to combat ecological issues.
