On 14 December, the UN General Assembly unanimously approved the resolution "On strengthening the role of parliaments in accelerating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)."

The proposal to adopt this resolution was put forward by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev at the 75th session of the UN General Assembly in 2020.

The resolution notes the important role of parliaments in strengthening solidarity and commitment to comprehensive cooperation to support a complete, sustainable and coherent post-COVID-19 recovery, ensuring that no one is left behind.

The General Assembly calls on states to support parliaments, engage them in future activities to achieve the MDGs and follow-up processes, especially in the preparation of voluntary national reports, and to ensure and strengthen national ownership and accountability. calls for help.

Emphasis is placed on gender equality as a central factor in efforts to accelerate the achievement of the MDGs by promoting the full, equal and effective participation of women in legislative and parliamentary processes.

The importance of the role and contribution of youth in the successful implementation of the agenda for the period up to 2030, the need to ensure full, equal and effective participation of youth in parliamentary processes is recognized.

80 countries from all continents of the world, including Central Asian countries, Austria, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Belgium, Germany, Algeria, Spain, Indonesia, Italy, Colombia, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Egypt, Netherlands, Norway, Pakistan, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, Finland, France, PRC, Sweden, Japan, Qatar and others became co-authors of the document.

UN structures and other international organizations welcomed the resolution.  It is noted that the resolution will be a unique program for the parliaments, and will activate efforts to speed up the implementation of the BRM.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union assessed this document as an important step towards the preparation of the BRM summit to be held in September 2023 as part of the High-Level Week of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.
