Over the first five months of 2025, 14 cases of food poisoning were registered in Uzbekistan, resulting in 42 people being affected. This was reported by the Committee for Sanitary and Epidemiological Wellbeing and Public Health.
According to the report, 10 of the cases were caused by botulism linked to the consumption of home-canned food.
Among those affected were eight children. Additionally, three cases of general food poisoning were recorded, impacting 13 people, including eight children. One case of chemical poisoning was also reported.
According to the World Health Organization, around 600 million people worldwide fall ill every year due to contaminated or poor-quality food.
In Uzbekistan, inspections conducted in 2024 by regional and district (city) departments of the committee revealed that out of 20,184 public catering establishments, 1,512 (7.49%) violated sanitary norms, rules, and hygiene standards. Of these, 664 (3.29%) were found with serious violations.
It is worth noting that earlier, four members of a family in the Pastdargom district of the Samarkand region were infected with botulism.
