More than 80 wild animals have been found kept in illegal captivity in Tashkent city and Tashkent region. The discovery was reported by the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change.
According to the ministry, a joint investigation was carried out in coordination with relevant organizations in both Tashkent city and the surrounding region. As a result, more than 80 mammals and birds belonging to nine species—including four African lions—were found being kept without proper permits in private nurseries and wildlife enclosures. Some of these animals have since been transferred to the Tashkent Zoo for proper care and storage.
“The study is continuing,” the ministry noted in its statement.
For reference, Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 736, titled “On Measures to Improve the Procedure for Keeping Wild Animals,” stipulates that beginning January 1, 2025, individuals will be prohibited from keeping a list of certain wild animals in captivity or using them in circus performances. Under this regulation, only legal entities holding an official permit from the Ministry of Ecology may keep such animals in authorized facilities such as zoos, terrariums, or oceanariums.
It should also be recalled that earlier, authorities discovered a Red Book-listed eagle being illegally kept in the Syrdarya region. An administrative case was filed under Article 92 of the Code of Administrative Responsibility, which addresses violations related to wildlife protection and illegal trade or handling of zoological specimens. The individual responsible was fined 1,875,000 sums, equivalent to five times the basic calculation amount.
