In Uzbekistan, individuals held in pretrial detention may be permitted to take walks of at least two hours on rest days and public holidays. This was discussed during a session of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis on 18 November, regarding a legislative proposal by the Ombudsman for Human Rights to amend the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On Detention During Criminal Proceedings.”
The Ombudsman also proposed including provisions allowing detainees to spend up to the equivalent of the minimum monthly wage (1,271,000 UZS) each month on essential food and personal items.
Additionally, the proposal includes norms to permit extra walks in the open air on holidays, and the right to receive clothing and footwear from close relatives or other persons.
The drafting of the legislative proposal took into account practices from the United States, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Germany, Canada, and several CIS countries. It emphasized aligning national legislation with international standards.
The Legislative Chamber approved the proposal, and the relevant decision was adopted.
