On July 11, a Joint Communiqué was signed between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the State of Eritrea, officially establishing diplomatic relations. The announcement was made by the Permanent Mission of Eritrea to the United Nations in New York.
According to the report, the two sides agreed to establish official relations at the level of permanent missions to the United Nations. The document was signed by Ulugbek Lapasov, the Permanent Representative of Uzbekistan to the UN, and Sofia Tesfamariam Yohannes, the Permanent Representative of Eritrea.
“This document marks the beginning of a new stage of cooperation between the two countries based on mutual respect and the principles of the UN Charter,” the statement reads.
With this, Eritrea becomes the 161st country with which Uzbekistan has established diplomatic relations.
For reference, Eritrea is located in northeastern Africa. It shares borders with Sudan, Ethiopia, and Djibouti, and has access to the Red Sea.
It is worth noting that earlier in New York, a Joint Communiqué was also signed between Uzbekistan and the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire on the establishment of diplomatic relations. The two sides expressed readiness to strengthen cooperation within international organizations, including the United Nations and its specialized agencies.
