The Senate of the Supreme Assembly of the Republic of Uzbekistan has approved the law “On Ensuring Freedom of Conscience of Citizens in the Republic of Uzbekistan and Approving the Concept of State Policy in the Religious Sphere.” Senators reviewed and passed the law today, February 20, during the fourth plenary session of the Senate.
According to reports, the approved law and concept aim to guarantee citizens' right to freedom of conscience while reinforcing constitutional provisions that establish Uzbekistan as a secular state. Additionally, they define the goals, objectives, principles, and priorities of state policy in the religious sphere, along with mechanisms for their implementation.
The document also includes plans to establish a parliamentary commission to oversee the effective implementation of the law’s key provisions.
“The adoption of this concept will enhance the organizational and legal framework for fostering religious tolerance and interfaith harmony. It will also help strengthen social cohesion, unity, and solidarity in society,” the report states.
It is worth noting that earlier, the Chairman of the Muslim Board of Uzbekistan, Mufti Nuriddin Kholiknazar, emphasized that implementing a unified state policy in the religious sphere would ensure equal rights for all citizens and contribute to national harmony.
