6138In the first six months of 2024, over 10,000 individuals were deprived of their freedom, according to a report by the Supreme Court of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
It was noted that in the first half of this year, criminal courts handled 29,086 cases involving 37,179 individuals. Of these, 465 individuals were acquitted and rehabilitated.
The number of convicted persons was 29,382, with 10,287 sentenced to imprisonment, 18,579 receiving other types of punishment, and 516 given conditional sentences. Among the convicted, 26,028 were men, 3,354 were women, 11,145 were young (including 1,068 minors), and 1,105 were over 60.
Additionally, 3,432 individuals were released from prison in the courtroom due to the imposition of non-custodial sentences, 16,624 were released on parole, 5,620 had their sentences commuted to a lighter penalty, and charges against 6,976 were dismissed by preliminary investigation authorities. Unjustly placed items were excluded from the charges or reclassified.
Furthermore, 71 individuals (including young people and women) received non-custodial sentences based on letters of guarantee.
Most crimes committed during the reporting period included fraud, violations of vehicle safety rules, theft, embezzlement, robbery by fraud, preparation and forgery of documents, stamps, and seals, intentional grievous bodily harm, illegal handling of narcotic drugs, hooliganism, intentional infliction of moderately serious bodily injury, and other related offenses.
The report highlights that, through the effective use of the institution of reconciliation, 6,337 individuals were released from criminal responsibility. Additionally, 4,798 criminal cases involving 6,395 individuals were reviewed in the appeal procedure, resulting in the cancellation of decisions against 307 individuals and changes to decisions affecting 1,311 individuals.
In the cassation procedure, 1,493 criminal cases involving 1,636 individuals were considered. Decisions issued by courts of first instance against 106 individuals were canceled, and decisions affecting 369 individuals were altered.
In the inspection procedure, 2,188 criminal cases involving 2,560 individuals were examined. Decisions against 45 individuals were canceled, and those affecting 337 individuals were modified.
The Supreme Court's Criminal Trial Panel reviewed 504 criminal cases involving 590 individuals. Decisions against 49 individuals were canceled, and decisions against 121 individuals were changed.
