The international community once again recognized the growing role of Uzbekistan in UNESCO.  For the first time, the country became a member of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Uzbekistan left several European countries behind in the elections for the organization.

The Intergovernmental Committee for the safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage consists of representatives of 24 states which ratified the convention for the safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.  Its members are elected for four years.  Half of the members are re-elected every two years.
