Living near the ocean or sea can extend life expectancy, while living by a river or lake does not have the same effect. This conclusion was reached by scientists from Ohio State University. The results of the study were published in the journal "Environmental Research" (EnviRes).
The researchers analyzed health data from 66,000 U.S. residents, examining how proximity to different bodies of water affects average life expectancy. The study accounted for factors such as climate, income level, air quality, transportation infrastructure, and the degree of urbanization.
According to the findings, residents of coastal areas live, on average, one year longer than those living inland. This may be linked to a more favorable climate, better environmental conditions, higher quality of life, and access to recreational facilities.
In contrast, those living near inland bodies of water—such as rivers and lakes, particularly in urban areas—tended to have lower life expectancy. This was attributed to pollution, dense construction, and social inequality, often present in such areas.
