Mirziyoyev meets with the head of the bank that lent the most to Uzbekistan

Today, 24 March, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev received President of the Asian Development Bank Masatsuga Asakava within the framework of the Tashkent International Investment Forum. This is reported by the press service of the President’s Office.
It was noted that at the beginning of the meeting, the head of the bank congratulated the Uzbek leader on the successful holding of the Investment Forum, which was attended by the heads of the leading international financial institutions and business representatives of Uzbekistan.
Current issues and prospects for further expansion of the strategic partnership with Asian Development Bank were discussed. The President sincerely congratulated the President of the ADB on his recent re-election and expressed special gratitude for the assistance provided in promoting the renewal program in New Uzbekistan, including preventing the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
“It was noted with satisfaction that bilateral relations were dynamic. The portfolio of projects has doubled in recent years and now stands at more than $9 billion. The rate of investment development in joint projects has also doubled. The Bank highly appreciated the ongoing and irreversible reforms in the country, including technical assistance in ensuring macroeconomic stability, modernization of the financial sector, energy, transport and infrastructure, as well as the realization of human potential”,-the report says.
The meeting discussed the development of a new program of multifaceted cooperation between Uzbekistan and ADB.
It was also stated that it was necessary to accelerate the introduction of «green economy» projects, development of co-financing mechanisms, expansion of business financing programs, including women and youth entrepreneurship, implementation of effective mechanisms of state private partnership, support projects in the field of education and health. These have been identified as priority areas for cooperation.
An agreement has been reached between Uzbekistan and the Asian Development Bank on joint adoption of the «road map» to promote the priorities of the strategic partnership.
For reference, the Asian Development Bank is Uzbekistan’s main creditor. As of July 1, 2021, the debt owed to ADB was $5 billion.
