President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has called on embassies and consulates abroad to take a more active role in supporting the increase of Uzbekistan’s exports. He made this statement today, July 30, during a videoconference dedicated to expanding the export of fruits, vegetables, and food products.

It was noted that this year, 80 percent of fruit and vegetable exports have gone to just five countries — Russia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, and China. Compared to last year, exports to South Korea, Hungary, Malaysia, Poland, and Kazakhstan have declined.

It was also pointed out that there are no exports to the United Kingdom, Italy, Sweden, Japan, India, or Qatar.

The trade advisers at embassies were criticized for their lack of initiative. Ambassadors were instructed to assist exporters with organizing production, identifying markets, holding exhibitions, establishing trade houses and production facilities, and obtaining certification for their products.

In the same meeting, the President reiterated that sector leaders in Uzbekistan must stop using weather as an excuse and instead adapt to conditions by growing crops that are resilient to heat, cold, and drought.
