The Central Bank of Uzbekistan has issued a warning in response to rumors circulating on social networks about automatic debits from citizens’ bank cards after answering calls from unknown numbers. The bank emphasized that such claims are unfounded and outlined existing security measures to prevent fraud.

According to the Central Bank, mobile applications of commercial banks and payment organizations operating in the country are equipped with multiple layers of security. To register on a mobile banking app, users must provide their phone number, enter a confirmation code received via SMS, and complete additional biometric identification to verify their identity. Once registered, users can link their bank cards to the application by entering a one-time confirmation code (OTP) sent to the phone number associated with the bank card.

For added security, the phone number registered in the mobile app must match the one linked to the bank card. If the numbers do not match, the system will reject the card linking process. Additionally, newly registered users are subject to a one-hour limitation for using their linked bank cards within mobile applications.

However, the Central Bank warned that fraudulent activity could still occur if users disclose their login credentials, OTP codes, or install malicious APK files shared through messaging platforms. Such actions could allow unauthorized access to bank accounts, resulting in potential monetary losses.

“Based on the above, the Central Bank urges the population and business entities not to trust unverified information circulating on social networks and recommends relying only on official sources,” the statement emphasized.

Previously, the Tashkent City Main Department of Internal Affairs had also cautioned users about scams involving fake promotions, such as messages claiming, “Telegram Premium for 1 year as a New Year’s gift,” distributed on the Telegram platform.

These warnings highlight the importance of vigilance and adherence to official security protocols to protect financial information and avoid falling victim to fraud.
