The issue of amending the borders of Kattakurgan city, Kattakurgan district, and Nurobod district of Samarkand region was discussed today, September 5, at the tenth plenary session of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis. A decision was adopted to expand the territory of Kattakurgan city by 2.9 thousand hectares, the Senate press service reported.
According to the information, Kattakurgan city is located in the northwestern part of the Samarkand region. At present, its population is nearly 95,000 people, while the total land area amounts to 4.4 thousand hectares.
Over the past five years, the city’s population has been increasing by an average of 1,100 people annually. In addition, around 4,000 residents and students who are not permanently registered also live in Kattakurgan. With a density of 9,500 people per square kilometer, it is the most densely populated area of the Samarkand region.
Therefore, the draft Senate resolution envisages the following measures. In particular, in order to expand the territory of Kattakurgan city, 1.9 thousand hectares from the Kattakurgan district and 971 hectares from the Nurobod district, totaling 2.9 thousand hectares, will be transferred to the city. Furthermore, 600 hectares of land from the Nurobod district, adjacent to the Kattakurgan district, will be transferred to the latter.
According to the report, with the expansion of the city’s borders, the population of Kattakurgan is expected to exceed 150,000 by 2030. As a result of the expansion, Kattakurgan will be reclassified from a medium-sized city to a large city. This will create favorable conditions for residents, particularly through the construction of new infrastructure facilities and multi-storey residential complexes, while accelerating urbanization processes.
“New manufacturing and service facilities will be established, and additional jobs will be created. In particular, a branch of the Urgut Free Economic Industrial Zone is planned to be set up on 50 hectares, along with three small industrial zones on 30 hectares”, the report said.
At the end of the discussions, the Senate adopted a corresponding resolution on this matter.
It is worth noting that earlier, at a regular session of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, the draft resolution “on changing the borders of Kattakurgan city, Kattakurgan and Nurobod districts of Samarkand region” was reviewed. It was reported that the territory of Kattakurgan city would be expanded and the city reclassified from a medium-sized to a large city.
