Kyrgyz scientists, in collaboration with researchers from the Museum of Paleontology in Munich, have uncovered the remains of predatory theropod dinosaurs in the mountainous desert region near the city of Tashkomur. This discovery was reported by "24.kg."

The newly discovered dinosaur has been named 'Alpkarakush kyrgyzicus'. The findings were published in the 'Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society' (ZJLS). According to experts, this marks the first discovery of a theropod dinosaur in Kyrgyzstan.

Paleontologists explain that 'Alpkarakush kyrgyzicus' is named after the mythical giant bird Alpkarakush from the Kyrgyz heroic epic "Manas." This species belongs to the family Metriacanthosauridae. Metriacanthosaurs, along with other groups of theropods, are believed to have originated in Southeast Asia and later spread to other continents via Central Asia and Europe.

The fossils were found in the sedimentary layers of the Balbansoy Formation, which was formed during the Middle Jurassic period approximately 165 million years ago. Analysis of the bones revealed that the dinosaur was about 9 meters long.

Additionally, it was discovered that the dinosaur's skull had large bony protrusions above the eye sockets.

For reference, in July of this year, the remains of one of the oldest dinosaurs were found in Brazil, with an estimated age of 233 million years.

It is also noteworthy that in January 2023, Indian paleontologists discovered 256 fossilized eggs from 92 nests belonging to titanosaurs, a large herbivorous dinosaur that lived 66 million years ago.
