17260Recently, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev suggested stopping the admission of migrant children who do not speak Russian to Russian schools. Alisher Kadyrov, Deputy Speaker of Uzbekistan's Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, responded critically to Medvedev's statement.
Kadyrov argued that such an approach could influence how people perceive the Russian language in the future.
"This cruelty toward children will shape attitudes toward the Russian language," he noted. "If the funds currently spent on promoting the Russian language in Uzbekistan were instead directed toward teaching Russian to Uzbeks in Russia, it would be more effective."
In related news, Yaroslav Nilov, head of the Russian State Duma Committee on Labor, Social Policy, and Veteran Affairs, proposed a bill to eliminate free education in kindergartens and schools for children of non-citizens.
Additionally, Igor Morokov, the children’s rights ombudsman for Russia's Sverdlovsk region, suggested in an interview on OTB TV's "Aksent" program that migrant children in Russian schools should be treated similarly to students with disabilities. Morokov argued that creating smaller class sizes for these children, along with providing additional pay for teachers, could help address the language barrier for non-Russian-speaking students.
