Sometimes on social media, we come across video messages showing donkeys being brutally beaten, a schoolboy hanging a cat by a rope, and a dog and a cat being shot with an air gun. Although we don't see such events very often in recent times, it is hard to say that such unconscious events are not happening.  So, are those who hurt animals punished in Uzbekistan?

Article 111 of the Code of Administrative Responsibility of the Republic of Uzbekistan mentions the responsibilities for cruelty to animals.

"Cruel treatment of animals, i.e., torturing them or inflicting pain on them with malicious or other low intentions, is the reason for a fine from 900,000 to 1.5 million soms," this article states.

If the same offense is repeated within a year after the administrative penalty has been applied, it will result in a fine from 1.5 million soms to 3 million soms or administrative imprisonment for up to 15 days.

Some people do not draw the right conclusions even after committing the above crimes and being brought to administrative responsibility.

If their next "behavior" leads to the death or maiming of animals, according to Article 202 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan, they can be punished with a fine from 7.5 million to 15 million soms or imprisonment for up to 6 months.

According to the information provided by Aziz Obidov, the spokesperson of the Supreme Court to QALAMPIR.UZ, during the 10 months of 2022, no criminal cases related to Article 2021 of the Criminal Code (cruelty to animals) were heard by the courts in Uzbekistan.

However, in 10 months of 2022, criminal courts imposed administrative punishment on 60 people under Article 111 of the Code of Administrative Responsibility (cruelty to animals).
