At 6:10 a.m. on May 5, a high-pressure gas eruption containing elevated levels of hydrogen sulfide was observed at well No. 202 of the Mustaqillik-25 field in Boysun district, Surkhandarya region. The Ministry of Energy confirmed that this marks a re-eruption of gas from the well.

“To prevent the spread of gas with a high hydrogen sulfide content, the gas flow has been flared under controlled conditions. Currently, all necessary actions are being carried out in full compliance with safety protocols,” the ministry stated.

According to official reports, the area has been cordoned off by relevant authorities and is under round-the-clock surveillance by specialists from the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the State Inspectorate “Sanoatkontekhnazorat,” and a specialized Uzbek military unit tasked with containing and eliminating oil and gas blowouts.

Authorities noted that the incident poses no threat to nearby residential areas.

It is worth recalling that a similar gas leak with high hydrogen sulfide content was detected at the same well on March 27. At that time, the well was intentionally burned under supervision to mitigate environmental risks. On April 22, a collapse of the well shaft and the release of the casing caused the gas flow to cease, though a slow leak (griffin) remained visible at the site.

Foreign experts are currently assisting in managing and resolving the incident. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
